Someone on tumblr asked me how to get into Umineko, and I decided to copy over my response here!
The best way is to play the visual novel, which is divided into the Question Arcs (Episode 1-4) and the Answer Arcs (Episode 5-8). You can get the VN on both Steam (Question Arcs, Answer Arcs) and MangaGamer (Question Arcs, Answer Arcs) in English. If you buy on Steam, they'll also recommend Golden Fantasia - don't worry about this one, it's a spinoff fighting game.
If money is an issue, there's a free text LP, the entire thing uploaded to YouTube (Question Arcs, Answer Arcs), and several streamers have undertaken the journey for you to watch. Two of my friends are watching Joseph Anderson's streams, which are really funny and passed my personal vibe check. Joseph Anderson in particular voices the narration and characters out loud, so you can put it on in the background and double task if that's a necessity for you.
I will give a heads up that flashing images/color happen multiple times throughout the game, so if you're photosensitive, I would recommend reading the text LP, which won't have that.
Finally, I really recommend this video:
It gives an overview of the game without touching on any significant spoilers and provides a perspective I honestly wish I had going in when I first read it! but Umineko is also a story that teaches you how to engage with it over the course of its run, so even if you're like me and go in without any of that, you'll be golden (pun unintended).
Umineko has three different sets of graphics: the original Ryukishi sprites, the Pachinko sprites and CGs, and the PS3 sprites and CGs. I swear by the original sprites for several reasons, but the biggest are that the PS3 sprites lightened Battler's skintone and most of the human characters' eyes, and the PS3 CGs completely changed the tone of my favorite horror scene in the game.

Sorry my examples are all Battler and Erika, I happened to have them on hand because I have a problem.
The two major mods are 07th Mod (Instructions for Steam download) and Umineko Project. Notably, I've never used Umineko Project and from what I've investigated I like their translation less, so all my personal experience is with 07th Mod.
07th Mod comes will several different features, but the biggest one (for me) is (Japanese) voice acting. I played without voices for the Question Arcs but really, really enjoyed what they added for the Answer Arcs.
The mods also let you use PS3 graphics, which I recommend against for a first play through, but I can't stop you.
The nature of Umineko means that content warnings themselves can often be spoilers, so I've created a separate content warnings page.
